Standard socks fail bigger men in one place: the cuff. A sock cut for a size 9 foot and a 14-inch calf will stretch over the leg, but the elastic cuff then works against itself, and the sock starts to slip down through the day.

If a sock leaves a visible ring at the top of the calf after a day, the cuff is too tight for the leg. Changing sock size will not fix that. Changing cuff construction will.
